About the After School Club (ASC)

Our licensed after school program runs from 3:00 to 5:20 p.m., Monday through Friday. There are 8 staff members and a full-time director, giving our After School Club an adult–student ratio of 8:1. At present we are allowed to have a maximum of 110 children in the ASC, but we anticipate expanding enrollment in the years ahead.

The ASC provides Paul Cuffee students with a safe environment in which to socialize with peers, do homework and enjoy activities that complement the mission of the school. While the after school program is more relaxed than the school day, the same codes of conduct are expected.

In July, 2004, the PCS
After School Club was awarded a highly competitive 5-year 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant. The grant allowed us to formalize partnerships with several local nonprofit organizations so that we could expand the enrichment activities we offer our students.

This year, Paul Cuffee School’s six community partners and the activities they offer include:

• drumming and drama classes with Black Repertory Company

• golf basics at the Buttonhole Short Course

• sailing lessons at Community Boating Center

• swimming lessons at the Eastside YMCA

• chorus and recorder instruction through the Rhode Island Philharmonic
& The Music School

• environmental education with instructors from Save the Bay

In addition to these enrichment activities, PCS teachers offer tutoring in small groups to students who require remedial services in reading, writing and math. As part of the ASC daily routine, all students are provided homework support during the after school program.  In addition, on any given day students may be involved with arts and crafts, board games, science, jump rope, cooking, creative movement, knitting, basketball and playground activities. Often their creativity is on display on the cafeteria or classroom walls.

Meghan Recupero, the ASC Director, is often looking for volunteers for a specific activity or day of the week. With a background check and a little training, you too can join the fun at
Paul Cuffee School’s After School Club!

For more information call 401-453-2626 x 117 or email Meghan at mrecupero@paulcuffee.org.
